Volleyball for New Players - A Comprehensive Guide

Volleyball is a fun and challenging game that everyone - men and women, boys and girls - can enjoy. As with the rest of the sports, playing volleyball game has its own sets of standards and rules that players must adhere. Failure to comply with these rules will result in the team losing points or losing the chance to serve.

Generally, the main goal of the game is to make the ball hit the floor on the side of the court of your opponent, while doing what you can to prevent your opponent from doing the same on your side of the court. The first team to score 25 points, provided they have a minimum two-point advantage with their opponent, wins the game.

The game is usually played by two teams, with each of the team consisting of six players each. The players are arranged in two lines, three in front and the the other three at the back. As the game progresses, the players will rotate clockwise through the six positions within their court’s side everytime that their team wins the rally, such that a new player will serve the ball for each service game.

The team serving the ball is the team on the defense while the team receiving the ball is the team on offense.

The server must serve the ball in the back right corner of the court. The moment that the referee blows the whistle to start the rally, the server has 8 seconds to complete the serve routine and get the ball across the net.

During the game, the team is only allowed to have up to three hits or contacts with the ball prior to sending it across the net. The teams are allowed to block the ball as it comes across the net. This contact is not counted within the set three-contact limit. The players must not keep contact with the ball for a prolonged period of time otherwise, it’s a violation of the game.

The basic volleyball playing stance involves placing your feet slightly wider than that of your shoulders. Your weight must be forward on your toes while your knees are bent. Your arms must also be in front of you. As a player, you will have to learn how to serve the ball and bump the ball which refers to the shot for returning a serve. You must also practice how to set the ball or get it into the air to allow another player to bump or spike it. You should also be ready to block in order to stop your opponent’s spike or attack.
