How tall should a volleyball net be? The height of the volleyball net is a key consideration that affects the style of the volleyball game play.

The regulation of the appropriate volleyball net height is determined by a number of factors and they are as follows:

  • Gender of the Players
  • The Age Group
  • The Number of Players in the Team
  • The Players’ Level of Skills

The measurement of the height of the net is taken from the center of the playing court. Both ends of the net should be at the same height from the playing surface. The sides of the volleyball net must not be more than ¾ inches or 2 cm higher than the set regulation height.

The standard volleyball net height for women is 2.24 meters or 7 feet 4 ½ inches. For women ages 45 years old and older, the net height is lower, around 2.19 meters or 7 feet, 2 ⅛ inches.

For younger volleyball players, the height of the net depends on the gender, age, height, and level of skills of the corresponding team players.

The standard net height for boys and girls ages 13 and 14 years old is the same in the Junior High and is at 2.24 meters or 7 feet 4 1/8 inches. For boys and girls ages 11 and 12 years old, the net height is 7 feet. Boys 12 years old and younger will typically play on a volleyball net height set at 2.13 meters or 7 feet. Meanwhile, the net height for girls ages 10 years old and below is 1.98 meters or 6 feet, 6 inches.

Volleyball Net Height: Special Accomodations

Volleyball net height is also adjusted to accommodate sitting volleyball teams usually consist of paraplegic players who have no legs but are able to play with a single or both arms. Therefore the standard seated volleyball net height for the men’s team is 1.15 meters or 3 feet 9.28 inches. And for the women’s team is 1.05 meters or 3 feet 5.34 inches.

For beach volleyball, the measurement of the net is at the sand-raked level. For women, the standard net height in beach volleyball is usually 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches, while the men’s are 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches.
